Finding the best dresses for your bridesmaids can be a difficult task. Many brides are now choosing a color and then allowing their bridesmaids to select the best dress style for their bodies.
There is a reason many women laugh when bridesmaids' dresses are mentioned. For some reason brides who choose exquisite wedding gowns often seem to have no fashion sense when selecting dresses for their attendants. Some speculate that hideous bridesmaids dresses ensure no one else can appear more beautiful than the bride. Others believe it's a power play.
A wedding is one of the few times in your life when you will have a chance to dictate what your friends wear for a special occasion. Think about the following factors carefully when choosing bridesmaids' dresses.
Flattering Their Figures: Some brides choose a color and let every attendant wear a different dress style. This is a wise decision when you are trying to dress some women who are petite, and others who are plus-size or very tall. Your friends will be grateful if you let them wear a dress that compliments their face and figure rather than forcing them to wear a dress that is not flattering to their body type. Figure types can make or break a dress. Keep in mind that strapless gowns can be a challenge for both petite and plus-sized women, and modest types often feel uncomfortable wearing backless styles
Colors: Pastel colors tend to look best on blonds and fair-skinned brunettes, but the wrong hue can make the redheads and olive-skinned brunettes looked too washed out. Look for shades that are flattering to all complexion or let your bridesmaids wear different colors
Matching Your Gown: Try to select bridesmaids' dresses that will complement your wedding gown. If you are wearing a slinky, column-style gown, it will look odd if your bridesmaids are wearing frilly Victorian-style dresses. Matching accessories can help create a unified look if your attendants are wearing different dress styles.
Budget: If you are asking your bridesmaids to pay for their frocks, do not put them into a bind by insisting they wear dresses that will strain their finances. Try to select styles that are beautiful without too many busy details such as bulky layers or big bows. Your bridesmaids will be very happy if you choose a dress they can wear again later for other special occasions. If the gown has too many adornments that cannot be removed later, chances are it will never be worn again. Simple styles like a slip dress or sheath can easily be worn again if teamed with a shrug or dressy jacket.
Flower Girl: Make sure to choose a dress that is appropriate for the flower girl's age and body type. A skirt that are too long or full might cause a younger child to trip and fall. Pick a dress that coordinates with your wedding gown or the bridesmaids' dresses and your color scheme, but find a style that will be cute and comfortable.
Time: Select your bridesmaids' dresses several months before the wedding to allow time for ordering the gowns, alterations and fittings.
